In early 2007, the Atlanta Falcons' quarterback Michael Vick was arrested. He was charged with running a dogfighting operation, an obscene crime illegal in the United States. Following the arrest and investigation, the property was seized, and the operation terminated.
But what became of Vick's abused dogs? Rescuers were able to rehab the dogs, who had spent most of their lives, if not entirely, chained. What was once the football player's Bad Newz Kennels became Good Newz Rehab Center for Chained and Penned Dogs. The organization transformed the property into the rehab center for the pups, even using the black sheds where the dogs were held as storage. The entire house was converted into five dog living areas, in addition to offices and sleeping quarters for staff and volunteers. Since the organization took over, its three different locations have been able to rehabilitate 254 neglected and abused dogs.
