John Childress is a police officer in Miami, FL. One day, he stopped for his dinner break at Tony Roma's restaurant. He sat down like it was any other day, but when he wasn't paying attention, something amazing happened.
A total stranger left him a note, and they had even paid for his entire bill. Childress wanted to thank the stranger but they were already gone.
"When I read that note, both me and the waiter were unbelievably touched," Childress said. "God works in mysterious ways."
But Childress couldn't leave things there: He had to find the person who turned out to be the widow of a fallen officer named Jacob Calvin.
"Dear law enforcement officer, my fiancé, Deputy Jacob Calvin, was killed in the line of duty in June of 2014," the note reads. "Thank you for all the sacrifices that you make every day. I somewhat understand the challenges that you face every day. The thin blue line stands strong. Take care and be safe. Thanks again, Sam."
It turned out Deputy Jacob Calvin patrolled in rural Indianapolis. One night, the deputy responded to a call where his vehicle ran off the road. When his car flipped, Calvin was killed.
"We reached out to the sheriff of the county up there, and he knew exactly who we were talking about. In fact, his comment to me was, 'That sounds like Sam,'" Childress said.
The widow's name was Samantha Hawkins. Finally, Childress was able to thank her through a FaceTime call.
"I wanted to let him know it's not easy; It's not easy what you guys go through every single day," Hawkins said.
