Ann Charon Rodgers was traveling through Arizona's White Mountains to visit family when she found herself in trouble: her hybrid car had run out of gas and charge, and she was stranded in the wilderness.
The 72-year-old stayed in her car that night, with her dog and her cat. At sunrise, she ventured out to find any sign of humanity, hoping to see a ranch or even an electrical pole. But she quickly found out that she was all alone in the desert. There was no sign of life for miles around her.
She survived for a few days on the resources she already had in her car. She's always prepared for emergencies, but she was quickly running out of food and water. Ann found herself searching for sustenance with her dog, eating anything from desert plants to turtle to survive. She saw a few helicopters overhead, but couldn't signal to them for help.
Then she found the carcass of an elk in the sand. The skull was bleach white, and she used it to her advantage: with white stones and sticks, she spelled out the word "Help" and pointed the skull toward the word. In no time, rescue crews were on their way.
But Ann was gone, and left a handwritten note on a rock, telling them where she was headed. Nine days after her car broke down, she was found!
Her dog and cat have also been recovered, and will be reunited with her!
