When I moved to New York, I knew I'd be losing the spacious living environment I was used to in my family home. Even my old college dorm seems like a mansion compared to some of the places you'll see on real estate listings for the city! But that, plus our much more sizable rent, is just the price we pay to be in the Big Apple.
Some people seek out the small life outside of the city, too, like the family who decided to make their own little haven surrounded by nature rather than skyscrapers. Others like to get more creative with the frame for their abodes, transforming everything from storage units to double-decker busses into cozy homes.
When product designer Daniel LaCalzi began his studies at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, he just wanted a place close enough to the school that he wouldn't have to worry about a long commute. That's what led him to the petite, 271-square-foot apartment he found on Craigslist. It was even more compact than LaCalzi originally thought, but he liked the trees and settled into his new home. After graduating, he launched his own company and decided he needed a little more space to get his work done.
Rather than searching the listings all over again, he put his design skills to use and created ways to get more out of the tiny apartment with a few innovative additions. With a lofted bed and plenty of discrete shelves, it became the perfect bachelor pad in no time.
