An officer from the El Reno Police Department is being commended for going above and beyond for a suspect's dog.
After apprehending the suspect following a high-speed chase on the highway, Sgt. Brian Hickman did all he could to make sure the man's dog was safe. The 10-year-old black lab mix named Athena ran from the man's car and ended up on a busy highway in Oklahoma.
Sgt. Hickman found Athena (she'd been hit by a car) and stopped traffic to put her in the back of his patrol car. He then took her to a shelter where she awaits adoption following her recovery.
Sgt. Hickman's kind deed is a heartwarming example of an officer saving a helpless animal from harm, as we've also seen from the ones who rescued a goat from the slaughterhouse and the ones who helped abandoned kittens left in a suitcase.
A driver recorded the incident and shared it on his Facebook page, writing, "Take a minute people. 99% of cops serve and protect us. In some cases like this one they serve and protect animals. Say what you would like about a police officer but this right here shows they serve and protect."
