One of my mom's favorite things to do when she goes to a beach is to scour the sand for the most beautiful shells. You never know exactly what you're going to find when you go shelling, as some call it. There is so much mystery lying within the ocean, you never know what's going to have washed up on the shore on one particular day.
Sometimes, you may be extra surprised by what you find.
Sand dollars, shells, and dried starfish aren't just pretty pieces of decoration to display in your home. Before a sand dollar is bleached by the sun and put up on your mantelpiece, or before a bunch of shells are rinsed of their saltiness and tossed in a jar for guests to admire, they house real, living beings.
Sometimes, you come across one of these creatures before their exoskeleton becomes a mere memento of a day at the beach, and it can come as quite a surprise.
But what a lovely surprise it is to see the beautiful shells of a mollusk at work as a protective enclosure, or the hard exoskeleton of a starfish slowly wiggling about underneath the water.
When this woman waded out into shallow waters one day to look for some beautiful shells, she stumbled on to just this.
How amazing the ocean really is! Full of such beautiful, colorful, vibrant life!
