We take extra precaution during the hot summer months to protect our skin, and our beloved pets deserve the same amount of loving care. A dog's paws are extremely sensitive to the environment. Since the pads on a dog's foot make direct contact with the elements, it's crucial to make sure they're safe from blisters and burns.
Hip Dog Canine Hydrotherapy & Fitness, which is based in Winter Park, Florida, recently posted a cringe-worthy photo to its Facebook page. The picture shows the bottom of a dog's foot after too much exposure on hot pavement. The pads are burnt and bright red, and the top layers have been stripped off as a result of the searing sidewalk.

Our canine companions love stepping out into the summer sun just as much as we do, but without proper protection, their paws are exposed to damaging, painful blisters and burns.
In June 2016, Hip Dog Canine Hydrotherapy & Fitness in Winter Park, Florida shared a viral photo on its Facebook page, warning owners, “This is what happens when a dog is walked on surfaces that are too hot! So folks, always check the sidewalk or road — if it’s too hot for you, it’s definitely too hot for your pets!”
During hot summer months, try to keep your dog off of hot pavement and sand — and if you do take them on pavement and sand, then take extra-special precaution.
Moon Valley Canine Training in Sonoma, California shared a brilliant way to ensure your pups' paws are protected. It's called the five-second rule, and it couldn't be easier:
"Place the back of your hand on the pavement. If you cannot hold it for five seconds, it's too hot to walk your dog."
And remember, asphalt is more damaging than concrete.
If you're in an area that uses road salt or sand, then you'll definitely want to pick up some dog boots. Salt and sand can really tear up a dog's pads!
Sand reflects light and heat. When you go to the beach, check the sand by sticking your hand under the sand's surface.
Other tips include waking up early to walk the dog before it heats up outside, and always finding a grassy area.
To ensure our furry companions stay physically and mentally happy, it's absolutely crucial to take these suggestions to heart.
