No matter what you believe in, it's always tempting to think that there are cosmic forces in the universe. Ones that can help you or explain the apparent chaos we live with every day. Unfortunately, this desire can lead to a lot of frauds.
Fake psychics, clairvoyants, astrologists, and tarot card readers prey on people searching for answers. Derren Brown is the first to admit it, he's a complete fraud. In fact, instead of scamming people out of their hard-earned dollars, he shows them how con artists can convince even the smartest person that they have magic powers.
Brown travels to America, Spain, and the United Kingdom and does the same trick to unsuspecting strangers.
He asks them to trace their hand and put a personal object into an envelope. He takes the envelope, leaves, then hands them back a lengthy personality assessment. They're pages long and go into extreme detail about each person's insecurities, strengths, and worldview.
Every single person falls for it.
"It's true all this stuff is true," one said. "It was shockingly accurate," another said. Many agreed the assessment was 90 to 99 percent accurate.
Then he tells each person to switch their assessment with someone else. That's when they realize it: Every person in America, Spain, and the United Kingdom have all received the exact same assessment!
Brown revealed that the technique is called cold reading, no matter how specific, some traits and beliefs are universal of all people. A psychic can easily convince you they know you when in fact they only know what's true of everyone.
