As CBS reporter Marlie Hall was getting ready for work one day, she got a horrifying call. Her father's heart had stopped in Haiti. There was no ventilator at the hospital, so nurses stood over his body literally pumping oxygen into it for over six long hours. Doctors told Hall to prepare for the worst. His brain was injured from a lack of oxygen, and his kidneys and liver were failing. The neurologists told her that people only recover from this kind of a coma in Hollywood movies. The man was dying.
Hall did not give up. She stood at his bedside, night after night, day after day. She would speak into his ear. Then a week later, her father miraculously opened his eyes. Doctors were still not convinced. They said it was just involuntary movements. Hall believed he was responding. Then, his lips began to move. Then, he began talking. One of his first words was her name. The daughter demanded another evaluation. To the doctors' surprise, he was recovering. Soon enough, Hall's father was cognizant and speaking.
"When you got sick, I had a lot of regret because I felt like I didn't spend enough time with you and call you enough," she told her father. "And now that you are here with me, now that I have you back, I will never let that happen again. I love you."
