When Senior Trooper John Hitchcock was driving down Interstate 80 in Omaha, Iowa he noticed some peculiar.
A semi-truck had the hazards light on — a signal typically reserved for moments when an automobile is malfunctioning.
Yet, in this instance, it was a huge cry for help.
"I noticed a semi-truck on the shoulder with his hazards on," Senior Trooper John Hitchcock told KETV. "I approached the vehicle."
Then Hitchcock noticed the terrifying truth: the driver was not breathing.
In times of need, all it takes is one brave person to see something and do something. A bus driver saved a young girl's life by catching her when she fell from a building window. Similarly, Hitchcock stepped up and fulfilled his duty.
"I knew I had to get him out of the truck to start CPR," Hitchcock said.
He pulled the man out of the vehicle and the entire ordeal was caught on his dashboard cam.
"His head was purple, grayish, one of those things where you know it's a bad deal going on," Deputy Kurt Ferguson said.
Ferguson gave the man CPR until the paramedics arrived. The efforts were successful — the man survived.
"My understanding is he choked and lost his airway, and it was that loss of airway that caused other problems," Council Bluffs Fire Department Capt. Curtis McKeon said
Altogether it took three agencies to work together harmoniously to save this one man's life!
"It's nice to have a positive outcome," McKeon said. "It's the fuel that keeps you going sometimes."
