Create Your Very Own Dotting Tool With 3 Household Items

If there's one thing you need in your nail kit (besides the polish, of course), it's a dotting tool.

For those of us who're either on a budget or simply recreational nail artists, there's good news. You don't actually have to spend the money on a fancy one if you're not up for it; you likely already have one sitting around your house.

Here's what a dotting tool is used for: If you're doing something like this adoable Dotticure, a dotting tool will help you make even, controlled spots on your nails without the mess and lack of control you'll probably have to deal with if you're just using the tip of your brush.

For a dotting tool hack, scour your bathroom cabinet for some bobby pins of varying sizes. Simply stretch them out to however they're comfortable to hold and use the plastic-covered tips to create your dots. And if you have an emergency sewing kit and a pencil on hand, you've got yourself a dotting tool for fine points and details — simply insert the needle into the eraser of the pencil to give you more control (just be sure to be careful!).
