Mike Walsh has terminal pancreatic cancer. He knows he doesn't have much time left, and that has put a lot of things in perspective for the 57-year-old. Most material possessions have little to no value to him.
The one thing that does is his wedding ring. A symbol of his love for his wife, he knew that when he left the Earth, he would leave her that ring.
“I’m going to leave her, and I’d like her to have my wedding ring,” Mike Walsh said. “I wore it every day. I wore it through the hard times. I wore it through the good times. I wore it through the broke times.”
Then, he lost it while visiting Costco after a chemotherapy appointment. Mike and his wife Cheryl were so distraught, they put an ad in the local newspaper offering $1,000 for whoever returned it.
To his surprise, he received a call from 77-year-old Floyd. The man and his wife had found the ring, put it away, and forgot about it. Then, they saw the article in the paper.
“We all cried,” Walsh said. “He didn’t want any reward. He and his wife were wonderful people. I think I got a good friend, and he helped restore my faith.”
Coincidentally, Floyd himself is a cancer survivor. He immediately understood what Mike was going through. Instead of taking the money, he told Mike to donate it to a cancer research fund.
There is nothing like battling a relentless disease to put what's important in perspective, but there's nothing quite like an unexpected act of kindness to show you that this life is worth living.
