Waitress Can’t Afford Nursing School, Then 92-Year-Old Customer Leaves A Note About Her Tuition

Like many young Americans, Melissa Mainier expected to be drowning in school debt for years and years to come. The aspiring nurse was doing everything she could to pay her nursing school tuition and took a job as a waitress to make ends meet.

Melissa took out a loan and worked as many shifts as she could at Peachtree restaurant in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

One of the regular customers at Peachtree was a 92-year-old man named Benjamin Olewine. Not only is Benjamin friendly and unassuming, but he's also a millionaire and generous philanthropist. He has always enjoyed giving back, from local parks to hospitals… but much of his goodwill goes unseen.

In April 2014, Benjamin came into Peachtree with his walker and appetite, just like he always did. He and Melissa chatted, and she told Benjamin about her dream of becoming a nurse, but also the daunting reality of her finances.

On this particular day, Benjamin's bill totaled a mere $3.45. But when it came time to pay, the elderly man insisted on leaving a tip that would change Melissa's life forever.

"I'd be happy to pay your tuition," he told her.

Melissa stood there in complete shock. She couldn't believe this was happening, or that Benjamin was for real.
