Las Vegas–based telemarketer Camille Elroy is used to doing the calling, but on one fateful day, she received a mysterious call that would turn Camille into a hero. Miles away in Oregon, a woman named Jenny was enduring two long hours of physical and verbal abuse from a deranged ex-boyfriend. The man, Walter Warren John Ruck, beat, strangled and held her at gunpoint. It was only through what Jenny calls "divine intervention" that she lives to tell about it.
"At the time, I didn't feel like there was anybody there and it was horrifying," Jenny told KUTV's Cory Marshall. In the last moments of the attack, Jenny accidentally pocket-dialed Camille. When Camille heard what was going on, she looked up the local police station and called 911. That quick thinking would save Jenny's life.
"I think that it had to have been a divine intervention because I wasn't getting out — not without help," she explained. Jenny would finally meet Camille on The Meredith Vieira Show a few months later. "It was wonderful to meet her. It was great. The surprise on her face because she had no clue I was going to be there. It was really awesome and to get to thank her in person."
While Jenny is glad to survive, she still lives her life looking over her shoulder. Walter has been charged with assault and strangulation, but made bail and was released from jail until the trial. Jenny still has one powerful message for survivors of domestic violence.
"The message is don't stay for that. I'm hoping that at least one woman out there listens that you don't have to stay. It doesn't get better. It's not going to change," she says.
