Officer Is Credited For Saving Dog Bitten By Rattlesnake

Bailey has always been the beloved family dog. The 11-year-old chocolate lab even appears in official family portraits. So when an intruder approached the home, 17-year-old Jacqueline was terrified of what might happen to the elderly dog. The intruder wasn't a burglar or criminal, but a rattlesnake that wandered in through the grass.

Jacqueline called 911, but by the time police arrived, Bailey was bitten by the 4-foot rattlesnake. Bailey had been bitten near his right eye and his face began to swell. The poor dog was poisoned from the venom. (To see how to keep your pets safe during rattlesnake season, read this article.)

The teenager didn't have a car and her mother was at work. Officer Chris Dransfeldt arrived just in time. He put Bailey in his police cruiser and drove to the nearest animal hospital. They didn't have the necessary antivenin to treat him. Bailey sat in the backseat whimpering in pain. But Officer Dransfeldt did not give up. He drove to the next closest animal hospital that was able to treat him. Thanks to Officer Dransfeldt, Bailey is recovering from what is nothing less than a near-death experience. And Jacqueline couldn't be more relieved.

“I didn’t do anything that I wouldn’t expect somebody else to do," Officer Dransfeldt told CBS. We have a feeling that just plain isn't true.
