It's flu season, which means that knowing the signs of infection is your best bet for getting better as soon as possible. You know what to look for in you and your kids, but did you know that your dog can get sick, too, anytime during the year?
That's right, dog flu can affect any dog, and can be deadly if not treated in time. There are two new strains of canine influenza, which have been quickly spreading across the country, and previous vaccines do not protect against these strains. But you can be prepared by knowing how to check if your beloved pup is sick.
While there is a new vaccine available, your dog can still get infected until the time he or she receives it. A decrease in appetite, sneezing, and simply not seeming like his or herself are all indicators that you should check in with your vet.
But the most important sign is dehydration. Just like humans, dogs need fluids to combat disease. When they are dehydrated, they risk death, but one simple trick can prevent that. If you lift up your pup's lip and touch the gums, you can tell if he or she needs more to drink. If the gums feel wet, your dog is likely to be adequately hydrated. But if the gums feel sticky or dry, then it's time to go to the vet!
