If you were asked to name the basic necessities of life, what would you say? "Easy," you'd probably reply. "Air, water, and food." And you wouldn't be incorrect.
However, according to science, one crucial necessity is missing from that list: shelter. Without a solid roof and at least a few walls, a living being could not survive for long; they need protection from the wind, rain, and sun.
But everyday, all around the world, innocent souls are forced to go without these most basic of needs — especially our furry friends. They wander our streets and yards, desperately seeking some shelter from the elements.
But one crafty mom, Instructables user Scooter76, decided to do something about that. After noticing all the feral and stray cats in her neighborhood, she got to building — and the results are truly impressive.

When this family noticed a lot of feral cats in their neighborhood, they decided to do something about it. They started off with five wood panels, each measuring 38' x 18'.
Next, they assembled a crew of eager workers. They figured this was a great opportunity to teach their kids "some basic building skills, cat care, and the responsibility of owning a cat."
After sketching out a design, they had the kids start to measure out the frame.
Fractions were a little tough for them at first, but they got the hang of it.
The kids were carefully monitored at all times, and the only power tool they were allowed to use was the drill.
The adults even made some intentional mistakes so the kids could troubleshoot and and solve the problems as a team.
Once the frame and walls were built, it was time to cut out the doors.
The adults carefully used a jig saw to cut out the shape.
Once two entrances were cut out, it was time to sand.
Then, they added some small feet to the bottom to keep the shelter from getting wet.
The next thing to do was paint. The kids happily took turns with the brush.
But they were a little bummed that all they had was white. Mom said maybe they can repaint it next year.
When it came time to install the insulation, the construction crew got another helper!
They used some 0.5" insulation board to line the inside of the house, then they cut out the two openings.
This will be great in the winter when stray cats need a warm shelter.
Next, the adults installed two cat doors. These will help protect from intruders, block drafts, and allow sunlight in.
Around the top, they added some weather stripping so it will have a watertight seal.
Almost done! Now it was time for the roof.
They added hinges in the back...
...And two latches in the front, to keep the shelter as tightly sealed as possible.
Finally, they lined the shelter with straw for some extra cushion and warmth. They stressed the importance of straw, not hay — since hay is prone to mold and combustion. They also recommend changing the straw often.
And now, after a little elbow grease and lots of love, this family has a shelter neighborhood cats are sure to enjoy. Isn't that a neat idea? I'm sure this is one project these kids will always remember.
