When Russ Harper, a humane police officer with Justice Rescue, got a call that someone dumped a pit bull on the side of the road, he couldn’t believe it.
The image was as startling as the pit bull buried alive in Paris. The poor baby was barely alive.
“He was lying over there in the weeds where someone found him and he was just cold and lifeless. I really thought when I picked him up he was dead,” Russ told FOX 29. Russ rushed him to an emergency clinic.
The dog, renamed Remi, was in horrific condition. Investigators believed that the “dumping” was just one of many atrocious acts committed against the innocent dog. They are certain his previous humans had been using him for dog fighting.
According to the Humane Society, dog fighting creates a sadistic culture that teaches humans to degrade animals: “Young children are sometimes present at the events, which can promote insensitivity to animal suffering, enthusiasm for violence, and disrespect for the law. Illegal gambling is the norm at dog fights.”
“Pretty severe bite injuries, and his body was very weak, and on top of that, a severe infection from all the multiple bite wounds he has gotten,” said Keystone Emergency Veterinarian Dr. Leanne Thompson.
Remi, who is lucky to be alive, is showing signs of improvement. Although Remi had only been familiar with the worst side of human nature, it’s clear from his interactions with Russ that he is able to see the best side.
“As long as he keeps showing he’s getting better and not in pain, we’re gonna continue to fight with him,” says Russ.
